Ugadi is derived from the Sanskrit words yuga (age) and adi (beginning): "the beginning of a new age." Ugadi marks the first day of the Vedic Calenedar, and signifies the beginning of a new year. This day is also sacred for devotees of the Devi, as it marks the beginning of Vasanta Navaratri. It heralds the arrival of Spring and warmer weather. As such it is a joyous festival signifying growth and prosperity. As with all New Year festivals, it is a chance to put the errors of the past behind, and to start anew with renewed devotion. On this day, the Lord is offered Panchanga Shravana, (a recitation of the spiritual almanac), and Asthana Seva. The scriptures state that devotees who partake in Panchanga Shravana on this day are blessed with the grace of the Nava Grahas. During the Asthana Seva, the Lord and His consorts are seated in front of the main shrine and are worshipped with hymns from all four Vedas. The Lord confers his grace and blessings on those who beseech him on this day.
